Earlier models of Volvo’s used a standard blank key
Volvo has been a car manufacturer since 1927. The Swedish car company is known for producing the safest car available, with a safety rating of 5 out of 5 in almost every test. While these are the safest cars available to drive, they also provide one of the highest security systems available. Their unique keys make it almost impossible to duplicate, as they use a 4 key wave system instead of the traditional 8-10. Because of this system, it’s hard to find a company that can cut a Volvo car key replacement for you without breaking the bank.
Earlier Models of Volvo
Earlier models of Volvo used a standard blank key, i.e. a key that does not need to be programmed. While they have discontinued making models that use this type of key, there are still times when you may need to have one created. We can cut a Volvo car key replacement on the spot for models like the 940, 245, and the 242.
Transmitter + Responder
Volvo’s 4-track high security key, on the other hand, does require programming and a special type of key, as well as a different way of cutting the key than a basic one. These types of keys are shorter than other makes of vehicles, and can be harder to come by. These keys use an immobilizer, or transponder, in order to start the car. The transponder (transmitter+responder) “talks” to the computer inside the vehicle, relaying a code that needs to match both the code inside the key as well as the computer. If it does not, the immobilizer will engage the kill switch, ultimately locking you out from being able to use your key.
Newer Volvo’s Model
Newer model Volvo’s use a FOB system that is dealer only. This is a new safety measure designed to prevent theft, as well as unauthorized people from being able to cut and use a different key on your vehicle.
